I AM A YOUNG HERO
YOUNG AT HEART, NOT IN MIND.
Far too many efforts to serve young people, including “at-risk” youth, are built around telling them what not to do. Do not do drugs. Do not drop out of high school. Do not steal. And fair enough, they should not do those things. But humans are rational beings and it is never enough to just “not” do something. The question is always what ought we do instead? The questions, then, are not “what not to do?” but what ought we do? What can I do? What are my gifts and how can I develop them and use them for the good? Deeper yet, what is “good” in the first place?
This is a dynamic program for at-risk youth that is truly empowerment-focused, starting with helping them know what it means to be human, how to affirm it in themselves and others, and how to see, affirm, and develop their own unique gifts toward serving others. This is true empowerment and education. This is “prevention through the backdoor” because it is empowering youth to do real, good, and big things, not just not do bad, destructive things. Whereby, as it is with any human, when we are so consumed capturing the good, true, and beautiful, it becomes easier and easier to steer away from the behaviors that put finding it at risk.
This is the essence of Young Heroes Academy, and it includes three levels.
YOUNG HEROES ACADEMY
Level One: I Am a Young Hero Book Club. Working from the long or short version of Young Heroes (End Human Trafficking Edition), these groups are designed to empower young people as thinkers, learners, and leaders, and help them seek and find the answers to one of our deepest questions: what is a human? Moreover, by way of understanding the grim reality of historical and modern forms of slavery, this program is designed to empower youth to discern their talents, develop them, and use them toward the good of abolishing modern-day slavery also known as human trafficking.
Level Two: I Am A Young Hero Action Tank. Building on a depth of content from Level One, our Action Tank program helps youth apply what they learned and empowers them to use their gifts to use their unique gifts, to affirm the humanity of others, to raise awareness about human trafficking, and in all, to serve others in a creative and communal way.
Level Three: I Am A Young Hero Worldwide. A unique and cool cross-cultural immersion experience, Level Three brings youth from the United States to diverse nations such as Cambodia and Morocco, and immerses them in their modern life and culture. Confronting some of the world’s hardest challenges, these trips are a mix of fun, life-changing, meaning, and immense self-awareness development; thus helping youth better understand their own humanity, the nature of the world, and how to do the biggest possible things with their life.
YOUNG HEREOS TRAIN-THE-TRAINERS
Also available are Young Heroes Train-the-trainer experiences which equip existing schools, organizations, churches, youth detention centers, and the like to lead their own I am a Young Hero Book Club.
